Dr. Alberto Sacristán Rubio, President of the National Assembly of Homeopathy in Spain, and President of the Spanish Society of Homeopathic Doctors is interviewed by Katja Schütt

Dr. Alberto Sacristán Rubio                                  Katja Schütt

Dr. Alberto Sacristán Rubio is a Spanish physician who specializes in Family and Community Medicine. He has a Master degree in Nutrition and is a University Expert in Physical Activity. Since 2015, he held the position of  President of the Spanish Society of Homeopathic Doctors (SEMH).

Since he was about 10 years old, he went to the “ambulatory” where his father worked as a medical assistant and accompanied him during the last hours of his guard on saturdays and sometime during the week. He taught Alberto how to boil glass syringes and metal needles to disinfect them. It was an entirely artisan process. He also accompanied him on home visits, but of course he was waiting in the living room then. Here the seed of his vocation arose and brought about his wish to become a physician and also a family doctor.

Some time later, when he was about to finish his medical specialist he discovered homeopathy as a patient. He went to a colleague because of a sprain and to his surprise, he was not prescribed an anti-inflammatory but a homeopathic remedy, with positive results for him. He studied homeopathy, exercise and nutrition at the same time to carry out a more integral medicine and to treat his patients as best as possible. In addition to being happy with his family and spending as much time as possible with them, he enjoys doing sports such as triathlon or cycling.

KS: Welcome to Hpathy Dr.Alberto Sacristan! We are curious to know more about all the therapeutic tools you integrate into your medical practice and homeopathy in particular.

AS: Thank you very much for the invitation to participate in this journal. The foundation of my training to treat chronic pathologies is fundamentally based on exercise and adequate nutrition. From there, I help the patient with other therapies and prescribe in a personalized way. The first discipline I studied was homeopathy and for a long time it was what I used mostly with my patients.

Afterwards I trained in acupuncture and lastly, in neural therapy. The application of one or the other or of their combinations depends on the anamnesis and observation. For example, there are patients with migraine for which I use acupuncture and neural therapy.

In other patients I might use acupuncture and homeopathy, and in others I also add magnesium and coenzyme Q10. In short, treatment does not depend on the migraine (the disease) but on the patient. But homeopathy is by far what I prescribe the most nowadays, followed by acupuncture.

KS: Like many others, you discovered homeopathy as a patient. Which experience brought you close to homeopathy?

AS: I’m going to tell a personal anecdote. Actually, my first contact with homeopathy was when Sepia was prescribed to a very close relative. I went to the pharmacy to get it and was told that I had to buy it at the fish shop. There were three other persons working in the pharmacy. Two of them were elderly, and I saw how they were smiling. One of them rose to speak and confirmed the pharmacist’s words that it would have to be bought at the fish market.

I insisted that I had been instructed to buy it at the pharmacy but the pharmacist argued that I must have misunderstood it. This conversation went on longer than expected and at one moment I said the magic word, that it was homeopathic. The pharmacist took a step back and said to me: “You should have said that before”. At that time I did not understand anything. Months later, I suffered from a sprain and was treated homeopathically with a very positive result for me.

KS: Gandhi once said,  There is no school equal to a decent home and no teacher equal to a virtuous parent. In what way did your parents influence your approach to practicing medicine?

AS: In every way. I can pride myself on my great parents, who also taught me the values of work, of a good job, of professional honesty and humility. My vocation has been linked to their teachings. Among four siblings, I am the only one who has undergone healthcare training and I am extremely happy for this.

KS: Unfortunately, family patterns have changed dramatically in many societies with the increasing industrialization and globalization. Do you see a relation to diseases that became more prevalent in our current age?

AS: Industrialization and globalization are two words, two complex terms, which I do not like very much. Currently, we are witnessing an increase in chronic diseases and a progressive deterioration in the quality of life of individuals due to them. We think we are improving our lives, but this is not true. Many advances make our health suffer, for example, the relation between flame retardants present in any home and the increase in the prevalence of thyroid disorders or cancer.

KS: You said you‘ve homeopathy to be the ideal complement to your profession of being a physician. What makes homeopathy unique for you?

AS: When I trained in homeopathy, I began to see patients in a different way, to listen to them in another way, to touch them in another way, to understand them in another way and, to treat them in another way.

KS: Working as a family doctor and homeopath you certainly have the advantage of establishing a favourable therapeutic relationship. Please let us know more about your experiences of how the feelings of humanity and confidence support healing.

AS: As a family doctor I see many patients, each of them with a very different personality, with different personal, professional and life expectations, and with individual illnesses and ways of getting sick. There are patients who ask for  homeopathic treatment directly, but there are others to whom I propose it after my evaluation and deciding that homeopathy can be of great help for them. For the patient who doesn’t know this kind of therapy it is necessary to explain it and why it can help them. The vast majority accept it and value the recommendation and treatment.

KS: With the currently prevailing reductionistic and mechanistic world view it is no surprise that the prevailing medical system has a materialistic focus that favors pharmaceutical drugs. Which problems do you see in practice resulting from this?

AS: This is correct, but I think that medicine is changing. I think that professionals are increasingly questioning that approach, either because of our professional elan or because we see patients who have improved or been cured by resorting to other approaches.

KS: Having a master in nutrition and being a University expert in physical activity you integrate both tools into your therapeutic concept. Hahnemann also  mentioned the importance of proper nutrition and exercise. Are patients open to changing their lifestyle for the benefit of their health?

AS: There are many prestigious physicians who base their recommendations on diet and exercise. It is really not an easy situation, and not everyone is motivated to modify dietary or sedentary habits after of years of life.

KS: Thriathlon and cycling are some of your leisure activities which you pursue with passion. But you argue that the kind of sport that is most favourable for health is the one done correctly. Please share some of your knowledge on this with our readers.

AS: Well, the statement that I make, is: “the exercise that is good for health, is the exercise that is performed regularly”. Of course, the exercise that is not done, does not help us to maintain health, that‘s logical. The same holds true for nutrition,  the most effective diet in the world to lose weight is the one that is done. Little exercise is done in the general population. The majority of jobs of today are sedentary, with hours in front of computers, and the journey home is by public transport or one‘s own vehicle. There are some tips that can help us, such as walking 10,000 steps a day, or doing at least 180 minutes of physical activity a day.

KS: Fortunately, homeopathy has an arsenal of remedies to prevent and alleviate symptoms related to sports and physical acitivities.

AS: Yes, it‘s true that the sports field is one of the areas with the greatest benefit from receiving treatment with homeopathic remedies. The advantages are clear: It is an effective treatment, which does not interfere negatively with sports tests, and they are not doping substances. For example, for athletes with insomnia, taking Gelsemium the day before a game, will give them rest without affecting their performance the next day.

KS: You are the president of the SEMH (Sociedad Espanola De Medicina Homeopatica) and co-organized the VIII National Congress of Homeopathy in Spain, in 2019. Please tell us more about the challenges homeopathy currently has to face in Spain, and how you as a community proceed to strengthen homeopathy.

AS: Yes, I am also the president of the National Assembly of Homeopathy, which includes 5 of the most important homeopathic societies in Spain, representing the vast majority of physicians, pharmacists and veterinarians who work with homeopathy. Perhaps the most important challenge is to allow university training in homeopathy again, as our healing art has been slandered by groups that exert pressure on the media, politicians, etc. in recent years.

KS: Thanks for sharing your knowledge and insights with us. Homeopathy will hopefully emerge stronger from the crisis it currently undergoes in Spain and even find the opportunity for growth with the support of all who share the same goal of benefiting mankind!

KS: Bienvenido a Hpathy Dr. Alberto Sacristán!
