Clinical Assessment of the Efficacy of Homeopathic Remedies in Psychiatric Patients

Introduction

No definite assessment could be found in the literature on a large scale on the efficacy of homeopathic remedies in psychiatric patients. A mental disorder or psychiatric disorder is a mental or behavioral pattern or anomaly that causes distress or disability, and which is not developmentally or socially normal. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), over a third of people in most countries report problems at some time in their life which meet criteria for diagnosis of one or more of the common types of mental disorders.

Methods

The authors have been dealing with many patients suffering from disorders such as   depression, mania and schizophrenia since 2008. Five hundred patients were interviewed and examined with a wide variety of mental, emotional and physical complaints from 2008 to 2013. Thorough case taking was done and recorded mainly in their own words.  About 450 cases i.e. 90% werer repertorized by the Radar diagnostic software using VES (Vithoulkas Expert System) with graphical and horizontal analysis to select the simillimum remedies. 490 patients i.e. 98% of them took the remedies from us at our clinics. Their cases were followed up to the point of an effective or complete cure.  The prevalence of the  prescribed remedies was: Lachesis: 37.4%, Phosphorus:17.8%,  Lycopodium: 11.8%,  Natrium Muraticum: 10.2%,  Ignatia: 6%, Nux-Vomica:4.8%, Sulphur:4.6%,  Calcaria Carbonica: 3.4%,  Arsenicum Album: 3.4%, Carcinosinum: 3.2%, Sepia: 3%, Argentum nitricum: 2.8%, Arn: 2.8%, Causticum: 2%, Belladonna: 1.6%,  Baryta carbonica:1.2%,  Aconitum: 0.8% and Stramonium:0.8%. More than one remedy was prescribed in several patients.

The success rate, evaluated using the patient records was 80%.  Four hundred cases reported partial healing or complete cure from taking their proper remedies. The patients’ need for conventional medicines decreased remarkably or was discontinued after treatment with homeopathic remedies.

Prevalence of Prescribed Remedies

Conclusions:

The authors accomplished a precise assessment in 500 psychiatric patients during 5 years. The most frequently prescribed remedy was Lachesis muta in 37.4% of the cases. The success rate was 80%. Thus homeopathic remedies can be a very good alternative or complementary treatment in patients suffering from such crippling conditions.
