My Experience Working in a Homeopathy Hospital

I started my internship practice in Aditya Homeopathy Hospital, located in Pimpri Pune, India run by Dr Amarsinha  Nikam. It was the year 2010. I used to go there everyday from 2pm and work there till late at night, sometimes past mid-night as well. There were several other intern doctors like me who used to come there for their practice tenure ‘internship’,with the aspiration of learning to be a good future homeopath.

The hospital had two departments, in-patient and out-patient. Yes, an “in-patient department”in a very unique Homeopathy hospital where the patients were admitted and were under observation by doctors around the clock. Everyday there were 50-60 new cases in the hospital of which we interns together with other doctors practicing at the center, were doing the case taking part and also doing the rounds. I used to take rounds from 6pm to 8pm to monitor the progress of patients that were admitted in the hospital.

In-patient v/s Out-Patient

During the day the patients Dr Nikam used to see were mainly out-patients in his clinic located at the ground floor of the hospital. If there were critical cases they were being admitted as in-patients based on the chief complaint and condition of the patient. Dr Nikam used to work late nights and look into the new cases at night. Why? In order to give his 100% to every new case. His hard work and enormous dedication to each and every case has inspired me a lot. During my internship there, I got the opportunity to see a great variety of cases from simple to complex, acute to chronic, from minor pathology to complex organ failures cases, heart failure, renal failure, cases where by-pass surgery was suggested. All these cases can be seen in the hospital as patients were admitted. This opportunity was not only to see the results but also experience the progress of healingin patients from day to day in the hospital. The results were astonishing, miraculous, with both acute and chronic cases getting better from the classical homeopathy approach.

Learnings from cases:

There were cases of renal failure, cases on-dialysis and patients with high urea and creatine were becoming normal. There were tests being conducted by the diagnostic team for every case admitted, as needed, during different phases of treatment.The results were analyzed to decide on the progress and whether to change the remedy or give intercurrent or complementary medicines.

I also saw critical patients that were admitted and already taking allopathic prescriptions which were reduced in dosage after a few weeks of homeopathy and then completely stopped the drugs after diagnostics tests showed improvement in their health.

There are some cases that I can still recall, such as these:

1. A case of reduced and blurred vision – which was back to near normal vision in few days of treatment. The patient could see clearly again after two weeks.
2. A small child who had not passed urine for four days. Dr Nikamtreated withone dose of remedy and the child ran to toilet within 5 minutes to pass urine.

I learned and experienced first-hand that Homeopathy can give results in critical and emergency pathological cases as well. It was a very good learning experience for me to witness first-hand the cases being analyzed and treated and patients getting better.I experienced the advantages of patients being admitted to hospital.As a homeopath after prescribing the first remedy, one can track the patient’s progress and response to the remedy. We could constantly monitor whether the cure is as per “Herrings law of cure” or not. It is vital to monitor the patient’s progress and know what happened after the first remedy. We needed to decide whether to change the remedy, whether an intercurrent or complementary remedy was needed or not. In the out-patient clinicswe do not have these advantages, as patients will come for follow-ups after a week or two and only then can we take the next steps.

The Incident and Golden Advice:

There was an important incident I would like to share.  The doctors, after seeing the case notes of successfully worked critical cases, used to call Dr Nikam a magician. He used to laugh at us and say “Homeopathy is a very advanced science, as the remedies act on a dynamic level, affecting the vital force. If you arrive at the right remedy using the classical approach you too will get such marvelous results.All you need do is work very hard constantly, with full dedication. Take every concept seriously. There is no question unanswered by Dr Samuel Hahnemann. In “Organon of Medicine” you can find the answers to whatever questions you have.To be a good homeopath requires mastery of the principles of homeopathy.Read all remedies comprehensively, understand the provings and pathologies of each remedy. Successful results can be had by any homeopath who has studied the remedies thoroughly and has an in depth understanding of this science.It is a lifelong endeavor.

I have seen Dr. Nikam studying every day, even with so many years of experience behind him. It is a must to read different journals, research, and go to seminars to updated and improve our skills.
