Tidbits part 13: There Are Still a Few More Things You’re Doing Wrong!

Written by Elaine Lewis

Part 3 of the trilogy: “Everything You’re Doing Is Wrong!”

1.  Like Eating Margarine For “Health”!

If margarine were good for you, you could buy it at the health food store!  People are eating margarine instead of butter because butter is high in saturated fat, which has become synonymous with death!  The fallacy of this sacred principle–that butter is bad and margarine is safe–is finally coming to light!

Margarine is made from vegetable oil.  The extraction process, whereby the oil is extracted from the vegetables or seeds, involves a tremendous amount of heat, breaking apart the carbon bonds of the polyunsaturated oils, leading to rancidity and the formation of free radicals.  Free radicals are like St. Patricks Day revelers on a Saturday night, falling and crashing into everything!  (It happens to be St. Patrick’s Day as I’m sitting here.)  Free radicals bump into everything they encounter, stealing electrons as they go, such as from cell walls.  The loss of electrons causes the cells to oxidize, making them unstable and, ultimately, die.

So, we begin with our rancid oil, to which we add the preservatives BHA and BHT–both suspected of causing cancer and brain damage–and now the oil has to be turned into a solid; so, bring in the hydrogen and nickel as a catalyst, and turn up the heat!!!!  Next we need emulsifiers and starch for consistency.  Then it has to be “steam-cleaned”.  (Don’t ask!  Sounds really “natural” doesn’t it?)  The “steam-cleaning” is for the purpose of removing the really awful smell.  Oy vey!

Chemical changes occur during the hydrogenation process:  Due to the high temperature and the nickel catalyst, the hydrogen atoms change position on the fatty acid chain, one atom moves to the other side in a way not found in nature.  This is called the “trans formation”, hence the term, “Trans Fats”!  These are the things to stay away from, people, not saturated fats, Trans Fats!  Read your food labels!  If you see the words “partially hydrogenated oil”, this is what you’re getting!

Trans fats make their way into cell membranes and interfere with cell metabolism.  They block utilization of essential fatty acids, increase serum cholesterol and depress your immune system.  Hydrogenated fats are associated with cancer, atherosclerosis which leads to heart disease and stroke, arthritis, diabetes, obesity, nearly all chronic disease; and yet, margarine is presumed to be a “health food”!

What foods contain trans fats?  Well, for one thing, fast-food French fries, donuts, candy bars, potato chips, cookies, fried chicken, other fried foods, crackers, pastries, cake…. Are you eating margarine for your health?  Can you see what a mistake that is?  Bring back the butter!  Here’s the butter I eat, from grass-fed cows:

2. Using Sun Block!

There is nothing wrong with the sun.

There’s plenty wrong with sun block!

This is another myth like “butter is bad, margarine is good”!  Of course, if you’re as pale as I am, you can’t go out on the beach for 2 hours on a tropical island at noon and lie out in the sun — trust me, I tried it!   You have to work up gradually to such exposure!  But is the sun bad for you?  No!  You need sun just like your plants do!

Why should you avoid sun block?  Do you know what’s in it?  Well maybe you should read the label!  Remember, whatever you put on your skin goes through your pores and into your bloodstream!  Here’s what’s in sun block:

Oxybenzone–Acts like estrogen in the body, alters sperm production in animals, associated with endometriosis in women, high rates of skin allergy.

Octinoxate–Hormone-like activity; affects the reproductive system, causes thyroid problems and behavioral alterations in animal studies.

Homosalate–Hormone disruptor — estrogen, androgen and progesterone.

Avobenzone–Chlorine from swimming pools transforms Avobenzone into acetyl benzenes and phenols, two highly toxic chemicals linked to cancer and infertility among other things.   High rates of skin allergy.

Parabens–Preservatives: allergic reactions and hormonal disruption.

What can you put on your skin instead to protect yourself from sun burn without causing harm?  The answer is so obvious:

ALOE Gel!

Do you know that Aloe Vera is an unmatched healer for burns?  You should have aloe in your kitchen like I do, just pour it on your hand every time you burn yourself and in seconds or minutes, that whole burn incident will be a thing of the past!  Of course, a leaf of the real plant is the best thing–slice it open and smear on the sap.  But Aloe Juice in a bottle works as well!

Use this instead of sun block.

But what about the need to protect against skin cancer?  We know what’s in Sun Block, now let’s see what’s in the Aloe vera plant.  According to “Aloe Vera for Cancer Prevention”:

Healing properties: Glucomannan, a mannose-rich polysaccharide, and gibberellin, a growth hormone, significantly increase collagen synthesis after topical and oral Aloe vera. (1) In the investigations, Aloe vera gel not only increased collagen content of the wound but also changed collagen composition (more type III) and increased the degree of collagen cross linking. Due to this, it accelerated wound contraction and increased the breaking strength of resulting scar tissue. (2) An increased synthesis of hyaluronic acid and dermatan sulfate, which accelerate the regeneration processes in a healing wound following oral or topical treatment has been reported. (3)

Effects on skin exposure to UV and gamma radiation: Aloe vera gel has been reported to have a protective effect against radiation damage to the skin (4, 5).

Anti-inflammatory action: Aloe vera prostaglandins production from arachidonic acid. Prostaglandins induce vasodilation, favor the appearance of edema and decrease the pain threshold (6).

Effects on the immune system: In a study on mice that had previously been implanted with murine sarcoma cells, acemannan stimulates the synthesis and release a tumor necrosis factor, which initiated an immune attack that resulted in necrosis and regression of the cancerous cells (7).

Antiviral activity: These actions may be due to indirect or direct effects. Indirect effect is due to stimulation of the immune system and direct effect is due to anthraquinones. The anthraquinone aloin inactivates various enveloped viruses such as herpes simplex, varicella zoster and influenza (8).

Antitumor activity: In recent studies, a polysaccharide fraction has shown to inhibit the formation of potentially cancer cells. An induction of enzymes who prevent from tumoral mutations and an inhibition of other tumor-promoting molecules has also been reported which suggest a possible benefit of using Aloe gel in cancer prevention (9, 10).

3. Tattoos

Speaking of putting things on your skin and having them go right into your blood stream…. whose idea was this anyway?  Do you have any idea what’s in tattoo ink?  Many of the chemicals were intended for use in writing, printer ink and automobile paint!  The FDA doesn’t regulate tattoo ink and doesn’t demand disclosure of what’s being used; in fact, they’re considered trade secrets; meaning, they could contain any chemical at all and they don’t have to tell you!  According to Wikipedia, a wide range of dyes and colors are used “…from inorganic materials like titanium dioxide and iron oxides to carbon black, azo dyes, and acridine, quinoline, phthalocyanine and naphthol derivates, dyes made from ash, and other mixtures. Currently popular is Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS plastic), used in Intenze, Millenium and other ABS pigmented brands.”

Sounds really safe (not!)

What have tattoos been known to cause?  Skin infections, psoriasis, dermatitis, other skin conditions and tumors.  Some hospitals won’t do MRI’s on people with tattoos because of the metal particles in the ink.  No long-term studies have ever been done on tattooing, the ingredients, or the effect on the human body.  There’s a saying, “If you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin!”  I learned this the hard way!  Many years ago, I was taking an antibiotic that I was warned not to mix with alcohol, that drinking alcoholic beverages was totally disallowed or one could get very sick.  So, one day, as I’m taking this antibiotic, called Flagyl, I was experiencing an itchy spot on my leg so I innocently applied some rubbing alcohol to it to stop the itching.  OMG!  Big mistake!  I got so sick, I was sick the whole day; and I didn’t even drink the alcohol, I just put it on my skin; but, the effect was the same!  So, yes, what you put on your skin goes right into your body as if you had eaten it, think about that the next time you go to be tattooed.

4. Tylenol (Acetaminophen)

Tylenol has long been considered a benign pain killer and fever-reducer; in other words, no problem!  I hear about people giving it to their children all the time!  According to a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology in 2004, acetaminophen, 4 times a week over a period of four years, resulted in twice the number of blood cancers than in those not taking the drug.)

There’s already an FDA warning that Tylenol is toxic to the liver.  Here’s a headline from www.FDA.gov:

Advisory Committee Meeting – Liver injury related to the use of acetaminophen (http://www.fda.gov/drugs/drugsafety/informationbydrugclass/ucm165107.htm)

and there are studies that link it to kidney disease:

“New research shows that long-term use of acetaminophen — sold under the brand name Tylenol — harms kidneys. This research was conducted on 1,700 women, and spanned 11 years. Overall, it showed that 10% of the women experienced a decline in their kidney function, indicating that their kidneys were being harmed by this over-the-counter painkiller. Women who took between 1,500 and 9,000 tablets over their lifetimes raised their risk of kidney impairment by 64%, and women who took more than 9,000 tablets increased their risk even further. This is yet more evidence of the dangers of consuming over-the-counter painkillers on a frequent basis. As a whole, over-the-counter painkillers are responsible for killing over 40,000 Americans each year — that includes aspirin, acetaminophen, and other painkillers.” )

According to a 2009 study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, acetaminophen is the main cause of drug overdose visits to the ER among children, more than 7,000 children per year. )

A report in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine states that adolescents who take acetaminophen just once a month have a doubled risk of developing asthma! )  That’s astounding!

You’re probably wondering what you can possibly give to your kids now?  The answer is: Homeopathy!  This is what homeopathy is for!  It’s natural and safe when used as instructed.  All you need is an acute prescribing book like this:

5. Milk

You’re probably thinking, “Is nothing safe?”  What’s wrong with milk?  If it’s from the usual supermarket?  Plenty!  They’re getting their milk from cows kept in CAFO’s, do you know what they are?  Here’s one now:

Nice “farm”, isn’t it!  These cows do not graze, do not eat grass, which would require a pasture, which would necessitate land, which would cost money!  What a disgrace!  So these cows do not eat their real food. They’re given grains to fatten them up, they’re given female hormones for the same reason and antibiotics.  How nutritious do you suppose their milk is?  Plus, do you really want to perpetuate this unbelievably cruel living situation with your dollars?  Then there must be some place you can go to buy milk besides Walmart, Target and your local supermarket.  At the very least, buy organic milk.  Best case scenario, you buy raw milk from the health food store or the farmer’s market, or try almond milk or flax milk or coconut milk (make sure there’s no added sugar–read labels!)  This is what a raw milk dairy looks like:

Oh look!  It’s a farm!!!!!  I remember those!!!!

We have to support these places with our shopping dollars or we’re not going to have them anymore!

6. “Juice”

People, I don’t know what you think juice is; but, this ain’t it!

Real juice goes bad!  It has a short shelf-life.  It separates.  Have you noticed that when you open a carton or bottle of juice, it’s all uniform?  It doesn’t separate and it keeps indefinitely?  How have they achieved this miracle of science?  First by boiling it.  (Can you possibly conceive of freshly squeezing orange juice, and then pouring it into a pot and boiling it?  I can’t either!) but that’s what “pasteurization” means, and all juices are pasteurized.  But that’s not all!  I had to look it up.  I found this explanation by googling, “How do they make orange juice?”  See below:

“How do you make orange juice? … Complicated!  Squeeze oranges, remove oxygen, re-flavor the now-flavorless orange juice with artificially orange “flavor packs” and…drink.

I never thought about it but it makes incredible sense now. Orange juice from Tropicana, Simply Orange, Minute Maid, Florida’s Natural, etc.—they’re all ridiculously consistent in their flavor. And the trick isn’t to get the most delicious tasting oranges but rather to create their own unique artificial flavor.”

Hopefully you now know that “juice” bought from the supermarket is not real juice!  This is how you make real juice:

or, like this with a juicer:

No more fake juice, OK?  You’re not doing yourself any good.

7. Miscellaneous

Now, for the rest, I’m only going to say this once, so, listen carefully!

1. Cooking in aluminum and teflon pots?  They’re toxic!  Buy stainless steel!

2. Silver dental fillings?  They’re half mercury!  Tell the dentist you want “composites”.

3. Fluoride treatments at the dentist?  Fluoride is toxic!  Just say no!

4. Soda?  There is absolutely nothing in it that supports life!  Make your own soda, buy some seltzer water.  Squeeze some oranges in it and, voila!  Orange soda!  Make “Sprite” with seltzer water, lemons and limes, add some raw sugar and stir.

5. Make-up?  Hair dye?  Lotions?  Deodorant and other commercial products you put on your skin?  They’re toxic!  Buy them at the health food store!

6. Boxed commercial cereals?  Read the labels; most are filled with sugar and artificial ingredients!  Go to the the health food store instead.

Take a cereal like “Honey Bunches of Oats”.  Sounds nutritious, doesn’t it?  Did you know there’s more corn in this cereal than oats?  So why isn’t it called “Honey Kernels of Corn”?  I don’t know!  And it’s GMO corn at that!  Let’s look at the ingredients list on the box of Honey Bunches of Oats:

Ingredients

Corn, Whole Grain Wheat, Sugar, Whole Grain Rolled Oats, Brown Sugar, Rice, Vegetable Oil (Canola Or Sunflower Oil), Wheat Flour, Malted Barley Flour, Salt, Corn Syrup, Whey (From Milk), Wildflower Honey, Malted Corn And Barley Syrup, Caramel Color, Natural And Artificial Flavor, Annatto Extract (Color). Bht Added To Packaging Material To Preserve Product Freshness.

What comes after corn on this list?  Wheat, then comes sugar; but, wait!  How much sugar is in this cereal, really?  Let’s add it up: We’ve got sugar, brown sugar, corn syrup, wildflower honey, barley syrup…good lord!  Do you see what they’ve done?  They’ve added the sugar in by different names so that “sugar” won’t be what it really is, THE NUMBER-ONE INGREDIENT in this cereal!!!!

OK, that does it for me!  I hope you’re going to change your buying habits for the better now!  See you again next time!

  • What a wonderful selection of Health Tidbits stated so clearly and succinctly. Every one of them is important and directs us away from potential disasters!

  • Whaooooo!!! I already know it and trying to find other things to eat, but it is very good you inform people about what we have in our “food”.– Gun

  • Elaine, thanks for an eye-opener article. Thanks for explaining the Trans-fats clearly.

We are limiting our Sun exposure by usage of Sun-screen lotions. Is it the cause of the D-Vitamin deficiency prevalent nowadays ???????

Regarding Tattoos, your explanation was incredible. What you apply on your skin goes into your body directly. I strongly believe this applies to “Hair Dyes” also. The hair dyes have chemicals , which permeate into the skin (the scalp) and create hazardous effects. Please explain the ill-effects of hair dyes in your next tit bits. Its been the trend to go for herbal hair dyes, but how safe are they..? I doubt ???

Juices, section was really scary. We are living in a processed world where there is little naturalism left………everything is processed and tailored for the occasion. Next children will be tailored according to the parents needs..(due to gene technology …)
Elaine, thanks once again for this article, you made us think…………Vamsi.

  • Vamsi, I should have included hair dye with make-up. I will go back and correct that now. I have a feeling that the people who work in beauty parlors, working with hair dye and hairspray, etc. are setting themselves up for cancer. Yes, sun block contributes to vitamin D deficiency. The Juice section was scary indeed! Can you imagine? How do you get oxygen out of juice? It’s an insane concept!
