The Books:

Samuel Hahnemann’s The Organon of Healing
The Organon written in 1833 was the seminal work of Hahnemann and went through several ediions and translations. The one used in Zizia was the 5th edition, translated from German by Dudgeon in 1849. It contains additions from the 6th edition added by William Boericke when the 6th edition was brought to light in the early 1920s. (224 pages)

Stuart Close’s The Genius of Homeopathy
Stuart Close was a contemporary of Kent but came to homeopathy as a student under P. P. Wells and Berhard Fincke in Brooklyn, NY. He taught homeopathic philosophy at the New York Homeopathic Medical College, from where he graduated in 1885. His examination and explanation of homeopathic philosophy is very direct and not tinged with the metaphysical Swedenborgian blanket of Kent’s work. It is, in many people’s opinion, still the best book on homeopathic philosophy available. (280 pages)

James Kent’s Lectures on Homeopathic Philosophy
Kent’s Philosophy is a transcription of the lectures on the Organon that Kent delivered to the Postgraduate School in Philadelphia. The Lectures were transcribed, in all likelihood, in 1898-99, and were printed in 1900. While it purports to be an explanation of the Organon, it is heavily infused with Swedenborgian ideas. Kent was a devout follower of the teachings of Emmanuel Swedenborg and saw in Hahnemann’s writings close similarities to the ideas of Swedenborg. The concepts of “will and understanding,” of “simple substance,” and of “octaves,” are all Swedenborgian concepts that Kent used to develop his understanding of Hahnemann’s seminal work. It was the introduction to philosophy for many of the people who became the leaders in homeopathy through the next half century and its ideas were the cornerstone of “Kentian” homeopathy that came to dominate American and British homeopathy. (244 pages)

Herbert Robert’s The Art of Homeopathy
Herbert Roberts was a pupil of Close at NY Homeopathic, graduating in 1896. Roberts, although he knew Kent, was of the following generation. Written in 1936, when most of the homeopathic schools in the USA had already closed, the book was designed as a text for medical students to get them interested in homeopathy. (285 pages)

The four books offer the grand range of homeopathic thinking (you’ll recognize the differing postures of most of this generation of teachers!). This Victorian version of the Organon was the standard of the profession until the 1970s (when another attempt was made at translating this work) and the edition the other three authors read. Kent’s work was done in the late 1890’s, Close’s work about 25 years later, and Robert’s work about 15 years after that. In a way, it is looking at four generations explaining the same material though the eyes of that generation. They all discuss the same issues but each approaches it differently and by reading all of them the richness of the concepts of homeopathy will become alive for you.

Zizia Philosophy is included in the Core package for both MacRepertory Basic and Professional.
