Clinical Pointers from Dr. W.A. Dewey

Agaricus – Asthenopia from prolonged strain with great twitching of the palpebral and ocular muscles. Agaricus 12 has, in the experience of Dr. E. T. Allen, of Chicago, cleared up several cases of cataract.

Ambragrisea – Useful in nervous coughs followed by eructation of wind. Reflex coughs rather than those of organic lesions of the respiratory organs.

Veratrum viride – Perhaps no remedy controls the flushes of heat, so annoying to women at the change of life, as well as Veratrum viride.

Teucrium marum varum – The remedy for ascarides or pin-worms; there is much irritation caused by them in the rectum. Hughes prefers the tincture or lower dilutions, saying that it rarely fails in this condition.

Sabal serrulata–This remedy is said to materially aid in growth of undeveloped mammary glands.

Picric acid – Halbert mentions this remedy as useful in arthritis deformans, and thinks that treating the disease from the homoeopathic standpoint will yield best results.

Oxalic acid – Oxalic acid is a useful remedy to subdue the precordial pain which radiates so frequently to the left shoulder in cases of aortic insufficiency.

Mezereum – Mezereum is most useful in ciliary neuralgia when there is a cold feeling in the eye, and it is one of the best remedies for neuralgias which are reflex from decayed teeth.

Kali chlor – This remedy is said to be the most homoeopathic of all remedies in Bright’s disease. It has scanty, dark, albuminous urine containing casts. It excites a violent nephritis.

Indigo tinctoria– Indigo has epileptiform convulsions from the irritation of worms, but the patient must be low – spirited and sad – “blue as indigo.” It is the “bluest remedy in the materiamedica.”

Geranium maculatum – Geranium maculatum in tincture is an excellent remedy to control haemorrhage from the stomach.

Elaterium officinarum – Cholera infantum; olive – green watery stools, coming with a gush, indicate Elaterium.

Carbolic acid – Carbolic acid has been used with success in tetanus. Phenol has been found to work better than antitetanic serum, which is preserved by phenol. There is no question but that it is a powerful remedy.

Therapeutic Hints for Nosodes

Thyroidinum – It is almost a specific for urticaria and angioneurotic oedemaboth of which are very important manifestations of vasomotor unbalance in allergy. The more edematous the urticarial rashes and the more extensively they appear over large areas of the body, the better will the indications be for the use of Thyroidinum.

Mutabile – The best utility of the medicine in the 30th and 200th potency was obtained in cases of low Puerperal Sepsis where after delivery offensive lochia with or without blood continuing for a long period with slow rise of temperature. Where Pyrogen fails to act. Pyrogen works well in cases where the temperature comes with chill and rises high and then subsides with perspiration. The cases covered with ‘B. Coli’ have not got such acute phase in them. They are slow lingering persistent febrile conditions.

Pituitaria glandular posterior – Itacts on the uterus and mammary glands by stimulating the estrogenic hormones and corpus Luteum. It is one of our sheet anchors in delayed puberty and stunted growth with amenorrhoea and atrophy of the breast due to endocrine imbalance. It regulates the action of the corpus Luteum in sterile women with defective development of breast, amenorrhoea, cryptomenorrhea and favor conception in many cases.

Insulin – Chronic intestinal disorder, especially with looseness of bowels with enlarged liver. The more chronic the diarrhea, the more indicated is Insulin.Ulcers, boils, bed sores, hypopyon as after – effects of Acute infectious diseases with disordered liver.

Lacdefloratum–  It has great scope in treating cases of Renal Colic, also when the calculi are due to faulty metabolism during pregnancy. It not only cures rapidly but sets the whole process of faulty metabolism in proper order. Fermentative acidity and constipation or sometimes dyspeptic soft stools are very often associated with colic pain. This nosode is sometimes very useful in pains of rheumatic and gouty nature during periods of gestation.

Aids to Snap-shot Prescribing:

Cramping pains – Cuprum, Colocynth, Magnesia phos

But the Cuprum cramps are apt to being in fingers and toes; and Cuprum is worse in hot weather, and likes cold drinks.

Mag. phos. is intolerant of cold in any form, cold air-water-draughts, and is greatly relieved by heat.

Coloc. is Mag. phos., only less so: except for its need of hard pressure, and its liability to suffer from vexation and annoyance; which are apt to start its pains and distresses.

Coldness – Camphora, Secale, Veratrum alb., Heloderma.

Camphora – icy-cold, yet averse to covering-in the cold stage: in hot stage, covers up.

Secale: feels as if coals of fire were falling on the part, which is cold to touch.

Veratrum – Sensation of a piece of ice on head (this led to the cure of most intense headache, the patient having become almost “mental”). Whole body icy-cold. Internal chilliness running from head to toes. Characteristic cold sweat on forehead.

Bearing down – Belladonna, Lilium, Sepia

Bell. Bearing down, better standing.

Puls. Bearing down, worse lying.

Lil. tig. Better crossing limbs and pressing upwards on vulva.

Sepia. Worse standing, as if everything would come out (Lil.). But Sepia is indifferent and chilly while Lilium is hurried and worried, and sensitive to heat. Otherwise their pelvic symptoms are almost identical, only more intense with Lilium.

Constriction-Cactus, Colocynth, Anacardium

Cactus – As if an iron band prevent movements of heart. “Constriction of chest, bladder, rectum, uterus, vagina.” Whole body feels caged, each wire being twisted tighter and tighter.

Colocynth – Constriction in chest, malar bone to eye, throat, stomach, upper abdomen, about umbilicus, rectum, anus, during stool, larynx. Perhaps our greatest colic remedy. Worse anger, indignation, mortification.

Anacardium – Sensation of a plug inside and hoop outside. hoop or band around a part. Nash says, “especially in spinal disease”.

Bone pains -Aurum, Asafoetida, Eupatorium perf., Mercurius” (one would add, Drosera).

Aurum – “Nodes and bone pains, with great depression of mind”.

Asafoetida – Inflammation and caries of bones, with exceeding sensitiveness to touch. Syphilitic bone troubles; pains worse at night. Adhesion of skin on caries. Characteristically “Fat, flabby and purple.” Discharges all very foetid. Excessive noisy belching.

Eupat. perf. Aching in bone: as if bones broken: feels broken, dislocated, beaten and sore. (Especially in fevers.).

Merc. Bone disease: pains worse at night. Aching in bones especially where skin is thin over bones. Profuse sweat which does not ameliorate. (A tip for Merc. Shivering in abscess cavity).

Drosera – Pains gnawing, shooting in shafts of long bones and in joints. Pains in tibia. Felt less when moving. (Especially with a history of T. B.).

Sticking or Stitching pains – Bryonia, Kali carb., Squilla”.

Bryonia – Stitching pains, worse, or only on movement-breathing etc. Affects serous and synovial membranes, joints, pleurae, meninges etc. Characteristically, irritable and thirsty.

Kali carb. Very like Bryonia but the terrifying stitches come whether he moves or not. Worse rest: lying on affected side. (Bryonia lies on affected side, to keep parts still).

Squilla – A great rattling-cough medicine, with sneezing, watery eyes, and stitches in chest.

BRUSSELS REJECTS THE SPANISH REQUEST TO CHANGE THE LAW ON HOMEOPATHY

The European Commission will not change the directive on the use of homeopathic products in the Union. The Spanish government asked to tweak the text that regulates this therapy -whose properties they claimed are not scientifically endorsed- during an informal meeting held in September in Vienna when considering the current regulation “a risk to the health of citizens”. Brussels does not share that opinion, and has reported that it does not fit into its plans to modify it.
