Dr. Subrata K. Banerjea, Principal of the Allen College of Homoeopathy presents a brief quiz. Can you guess the remedies from these snapshots of cases? (Answers are at the end of the article.)
Case Story- 1
This is an interesting story of a patient suffering from Asthma. He is in his late 30’s and suffers from post-nasal dripping with chronic catarrh. While analysing the case from head to foot, I found he has difficulty in combing his hair because of dryness. His asthma is worse from sitting-up and better by lying down, which is unusual. For last the 4 years, he suffered from cough, every winter. He also suffers from profuse sweating which sometimes makes his cough better. This short story led me to think of a master blaster polychrest in our Homoeopathy and he was better within 9 months. Please guess the medicine.
Case Story- 2
This is a short case story (case seen in the Rural Fast Prescribing Clinic) of a man who rushes to the loo for passing stool, every time he has a chilled drink (which he likes). He also feels sleepy after eating, especially after lunch and dinner, but he becomes unusually energetic after breakfast. He also has a peculiar backache, every morning in bed. That was enough hints for me to prescribe the desired remedy. What is it?
Case Story- 3
This is a case of a boy of 9 who has an annoying habit of constantly playing with his genitals, even in front of the public. Doctor likes to prescribe psychiatric medicine for the trouble which his mother does not like. The case was more or less one sided with lack of symptoms. The boy also has loud snoring during sleep. One of the interesting symptoms I got from his mother was the constant reference to his height and he talks about it quite often to his friends and family. This lead me to prescribe an interesting polychrest for this patient which resolved all the problems within 11 months. What was that polychrest?
Case Story- 4
This is a case of a young autistic girl, aged 8 suffering from chronic diarrhoea for 3 months. This made her extremely weak as she lost a half stone of weight (about 3 kgs.). She is an irritable girl specially during early morning, on waking. She also suffers from frequent attacks of cold and tonsillitis which are generally precipitated in damp weather. This short case story led me to think of a master blaster polychrest in our Homoeopathy and the girl was better within 9 months and started gaining weight. What will be your prescription for her?
Case Story- 5
This is a story from my India consulting room, of a young man in his early 30’s suffering from sudden loss of power of arms and legs; almost partial paresis, leading to paralytic weakness of extremities for the last 8 months. On thoroughly scrutinising about the past history and N.B.W.S. (Never Been Well Since) the only hint I got was about getting thoroughly drenched and soaked about 5 weeks before the problem started (about 9 months back).
He had been treated by one of the leading homoeopaths of the City of Joy (Calcutta), who had given Rhus Tox, 200C followed by 1M and thereafter 10M in a span of 6 months which made about 25% change and then for the last 2 months he was absolutely standstill and the last few weeks he feels deterioration. As he was panicking; the Homoeopath referred him to me. On going through his case, I found loud honking of the horns of the Calcutta’s cars are extremely annoying for him and makes him irritable and impatient. His bowels are not clear. When I wrote the prescription and gave it to him, he gave me a bizarre look, as if “Did I came to you for such an ordinary remedy/prescription?” Guess what the common medicine/prescription was? The patient started improving soon after taking the medicine and got totally better in 7 months! Glory goes to Hahnemann and his beautiful Homoeopathy!
Case Story- 6
This is a story of a young woman in her mid 20’s who has a few annoying problems for which she consulted me. (a) she has sudden call to urinate; must hurry otherwise might have an accident; (b) extremely strong smelling sweat, like that of garlicky odour, specially from her armpits. (c) she also has extreme difficulty in combing because of the stiffness of her hairs. These are making her annoyed and depressed and she’s losing interest in life. During head to foot discussion, she mentioned that she loves fizzy drinks and she drinks a lot (non-alcoholic fizzy drinks) but eats little. This lead me to prescribe one of our greatest polychrests and the patient was better within 6 months. Look for the opening in the case and that will lead you to find the right remedy!
Case Story- 7:
This is a case of a middle-aged woman whose main problem was complete loss of appetite on the days she goes to the gym. Also, she gets headache after the workout. This was more or less a one-sided case with no more major symptoms.
The only other thing she mentioned was a peculiar tickling cough that sometimes she gets only during and/or after eating. She is a chilly person and catches cold easily and her weakest organ is her nose with the manifestation of recurrent sneezing. Interestingly, she enjoys sneezing and her headache gets slightly better. This gave me ample clue to prescribe the medicine which relieved the patient of all her symptoms within 16 weeks. What’s the medicine?
Case Story- 8
This is the case story of a man in his late 50’s who suffers from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, debility most marked in the morning. He also has gas and distention specially from cabbage, beans, etc. The other complaint he mentioned was frontal headache which is better in fresh open air. This was a quick prescribing session in the slum clinic in India and the prescribed polychrest did the job within 7 months. What you will prescribe for him?
Case Story- 9
This is a case of a young girl aged about 12 years with absolute lack of fear which was elucidated by her mom through different examples, e.g., climbing trees, chasing dogs etc. She just started her menstruation the 6 months and every time she develops a husky voice during her period. Occasionally she has difficulty in breathing in the damp weather. Generally during difficulty breathing she takes an inhaler and does not like to go to school because of profuse perspiration. The Homoeopathic medicine not only has modified her personality but also took care of her breathing problem. That’s the wonderful totality approach in Homoeopathy. The patient was totally better within 11 months.
Case Story- 10
This is a case of a young girl aged 14 years suffering from annoying small boils popping up in her face for last 9 months during her periods. Boils generally appear on the 2nd day and clear-up by the 5th day of each period. She also suffers from extreme itching of her anus for which she has been tested for worms but they were negative. Amongst her homoeopathic generalities, she is a very thirsty person, loves salty, savoury foods and enjoys warm drinks. She also occasionally suffers from sinusitis with stuffed nose. This short story led me to think of a master blaster polychrest in our Homoeopathy and she was better very quickly. Can you think of the polychrest that will cure her?
Case Story- 11
This is a case of a chronic catarrhal condition in a man in his late 40’s suffering from recurrent chest infection with expectoration of salty, savoury taste! He catches cold very easily and colds settles in the chest. The other interesting thing he described is his sour eructation and flatulence which is aggravated after every time he has soup! This was enough for me to select one of the interesting polychrests which relieved the symptom of the patient within 4 months.
Case Story- 12:
This is an interesting case of photophobia which started 6 weeks back after a slight abrasion from a thorn while doing gardening. What would you prescribe? A deep acting polychrest or an acute? The patient was totally better within 4 weeks. Glory goes to Hahnemann and his beautiful Homoeopathy.

I HAVE LEARNT FROM DR BANERJEA, THAT HOMEOPATHS SHOULD HAVE PATIENCE WHILE TREATING PATIENTS WITH ONE REMEDY ONLY, MAY IT TAKES 6 TO 12 MONTHS . I ALSO APPRECIATE HIS ABILITY TO HOLD PATIENTS FOR SUCH LONG TIME.
