Valvular heart disease

Types of valvular heart disease, information about causes of valvular heart disease, valvular heart disease symptoms treatment with homeopathy medicine, or homeopathic treatment for valvular heart disease symptoms.

Valvular heart disease refers to several disorder and diseases of the valves of heart, which regulate the blood through the heart chambers.

Valvular heart disease aetiology

Historically, the most common cause of valvular heart disease was rheumatic fever. Acute rheumatic fever produces a chronic inflammatory valvulitis resulting in thickening of the valve apparatus and retraction of the valve leaflets. These changes predisposes to malcoaptation of the leaflets during valve closure and development of regurgitation. Furthermore, progressive valvular scarring and fusion of the valve opening with resultant stenosis.

The mitral valve is most commonly affected, followed in decreasing order by combined mitral and aortic valve involvement, isolated aortic valve involvement and then tricuspid valve involvement. The pulmonic valve is rarely affected; rheumatic valves are prone to infection, which in turn can result in further valvular degeneration.

Other common disorders associated with specific valvular lesions include the following:

Aortic stenosis

  • Congenitally bicuspid valve
  • Rheumatic fever
  • Calcific degeneration

Aortic regurgitation

  • Congenitally bicuspid valve
  • Infective endocarditis
  • Rheumatic fever
  • Aneurysm of the aortic root
  • Connective tissue disease

Mitral stenosis

  • Rheumatic fever
  • Mitral annular calcification
  • Iatrogenic

Mitral regurgitation

  • Mitral valve prolapsed
  • Myocardial infarction or ischemia
  • Infective endocarditis
  • ‘rheumatic fever
  • Left ventricular dilatation

Symptoms of valvular heart disease

  • Shortness of breath – especially when lie down flat in bed.
  • Weakness or dizziness
  • Chest discomfort or pressure in chest
  • Palpitations
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Swelling of ankle and feet
  • Rapid weight gain

Diagnosis of valvular heart disease

Diagnosis of valvular heart is mainly based upon history, physical examination, sign, symptoms, and laboratory investigations.

Diagnostic tests mainly include:

  • Echocardiography
  • Transesophageal echocardiography
  • Magnetic resonance imaging
  • Cardiac cauterization
  • Radionuclide scans.
