What is Volvulus of intestine?

A Volvulus is a twisting of the intestine which obstructs the passage of food and fluid through intestine. Volvulus occurs in a bowel segment enough to twist. The most common area, particularly in adults, is the sigmoid colon; the small bowel is a common site in children.

symptoms of volvulus of intestine

The clinical presentation of Volvulus varies somewhat, according to the site of torsion. The symptoms of sigmoid Volvulus resemble those of a distal colonic obstruction and include abdominal pain and distension, nausea, constipation, and occasionally, vomiting.

The pain usually continuous and severe, with a superimposed colicky exacerbation of the pain with peristalsis. In some patients, particularly children, the Volvulus resolves spontaneously and then recurs, producing intermittent symptoms and making the diagnosis challenging. Cecal Volvulus manifests with symptoms more similar to those of small bowel obstruction, including some degree of distension. As with sigmoid Volvulus, the pain is often severe and constant, with peristaltic exacerbations.

Complications of Volvulusof of intestine

A life threatening complication of colonic Volvulus is intestinal gangrene with peritonitis and sepsis. Although gangrene is relatively uncommon, it can develop rapidly in patients with an uncorrected Volvulus.
