Cardiac arrest is defined as the abrupt cessation of cardiac pump function that results in death, which may be averted of prompt intervention is instituted. A number of cardiac disorders cause lethal tachyarrhythmias or failure of formation or transmission of the cardiac impulse that results in cardiac arrest, but the mechanisms that initiate these fatal arrhythmias are mostly unknown and are diverse.

Cardiac arrest causes

Cardiac arrest is most often secondary to VF, a condition that is curable if treated early enough. Unfortunately, a significant number of patients have cardiac arrest secondary to asystole. The most common cause predisposing condition in patients with cardiac arrest is coronary artery disease. Nevertheless uncommon conditions need to be ruled out to prevent recurrence. Severe electrolyte abnormalities may provoke cardiac arrest. A variety of other conditions, including the long Q-T syndromes may be the cause. Cardiac arrest also may occur secondary to respiratory arrest.

Cardiac arrest symptoms

The most important and common symptom is chest discomfort, including chest pain. The intensity of chest varies markedly among cardiac arrest victims, so some people may experience little or no chest pain.

Patient may feel a sensation of pressure or fullness, or a squeezing pain in the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes. Chest pain may spread to shoulder, arm, and back, and even to jaw and teeth.

Prolonged episodes of chest discomfort may accompany upper abdominal pain differs from other forms of gastrointestinal disorders.

Patient may have dyspnea after even minimal physical exertion, and this could be followed by sweating, nausea, and vomiting.  Patient feels markedly fatigued or weak and laps into syncope, or even impending death.

Palpitations may also occur, marked weakness can occur with or without chest pain.
