Spina bifida in a Girl of 3

Written by Shyamji Rai

Dr. Shyamji Rai shares a case of spina bifida in a girl of three. Miasmatic treatment preceded the rest of the protocol which included a number of remedies sequentially.

After a brief testimonial from the parents of this child, Dr. Rai discusses the girl’s homeopathic treatment.

Our daughter was diagnosed prenatally with Myelomeningocele (spina bifida) lesion level L2-S1 in 2017. She underwent closure surgery in utero at 25 weeks 6 days. At birth, she was diagnosed with bilateral grade 2 Vesicoureteral reflux, and she was being catheterized four times daily.At age 9 months (2018), we began working with a naturopathic urologist using two herbal tinctures to control bladder spasms and encourage nerve stimulation. Within twelve months, the Vesicoureteral reflux was gone. She has not had a need for a VP shunt.
At the time we found Dr. Shyamji Rai consulting Homeopath from India (2020), our daughter was just under three years of age and struggling consistently with constipation, so much so that I was exploring intervention with enemas.
However, she could sense the urge to make a bowel movement occasionally. Her cathing volumes were reducing over time, and she had minimal success toileting at that time. Her gross motor function was slowly developing.
At the time we found the homeopath she could crawl, creep, stand with handhold to stabilize, and independently stand from a short stool but could not take more than three steps independently.

Within weeks of starting Dr. Rai’s protocol, her strength improved greatly. She was able to walk everywhere inside the house, albeit slow and she was still quite weak. Over the course of two months, she gained a marked increase in sensation and control over her bladder and bowel.

The constipation was gone and has not returned. Her urology testing improved steadily over time. In 2021 at age 4, we stopped catheterization and the herbal tinctures since her bladder could empty itself without intervention, and there was no abnormal pressures in the bladder, as evidenced by her consistently improving urology testing over time.

It has taken two years of consistent effort, but she is now to the point where she does not even need an incontinence pad in her underwear in case of mild urinary incontinence. We are working on night time continence now (2023).
This is an incredible achievement given her diagnosis. Her gross motor abilities have also improved significantly over time. She can now walk, run, jump, kick balls, and dance (although not perfectly). Her strength and sensation is very much improved, and I firmly believe it will continue to improve thanks to the good work of homeopathy. Of course we work hard with physical therapy, but homeopathy has taken our daughter’s to levels we never dreamed of. I thank God every day we found Homeopathy.

Note from Dr. Shyamji Rai

Mrs C. K. from the USA contacted us after reading the Spina Bifida case published in Hpathy https://hpathy.com/clinical-cases/case-spina-bifida/

Her 3 year old daughter has L2 level spina bifida (Myelomeningocele). She use to take herbal tinctures (belladonna, gota kola, rosemary, and American-sourced sweet flag) to manage neurogenic bladder and bowel.

Catheterization 4 times daily. No history of urinary tract infections. No VP shunt or other comorbidities. She has muscle weakness in lower extremities. She can stand independently from a small chair and step about 1 meter. She can stand at a stationary support (table), cruise, and can pedal a recumbent tricycle. She was on track developmentally except for walking and toileting.

She had her lesion repaired in utero at 25 weeks and 6 days gestation. Delivered via C-section at 37 weeks 2 days. Healthy birth with no interventions after birth. She stayed in NICU for 8 days to collect baseline data for neurosurgeon and urologist.

After studying Ada’s case we selected the following rubrics
Back; curvature of spine; from decay of lumbar spine;
Back; inflammation; spinal cord;
Rectum; constipation; inactivity of rectum
Abdomen; bladder; inactivity of bladder;
Generalities; temperature; worse cold in general
Perspiration
Perspiration; odour; offensive

Prescription
Day one
One dose of Thuja 1m was prescribed as miasmatic prescription
Day two onwards
– Silicea 30 – 3 pills before breakfast for seven days
– Calcarea flour 6x (biochemic medicine) for 30 days
After 120 days of treatment.
We noticed significant changes in Ada, and we prescribed many other medicines during the course of treatment depending upon many acute conditions and other indications: Five phos 6x (biochemic medicine), Silicea 6x (biochemic medicine), Causticum, Pulsatila, Cal phos, Calcarea carb etc.
