Prof. Dr. Kamala Kanta Kar (my revered teacher Dr. Kar Sir) was a legendary figure in homoeopathy. He received a Diploma in homoeopathy from DN De Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Calcutta. He started his teaching career as lecturer in Govt. Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Bhubaneswar (later renamed Dr. Abhin Chandra Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital) and finally was promoted as Principal-cum-Superintendent, in the rank of Professor.
Dr. Kar Sir was an eminent teacher, reputed clinician, prolific writer, and an eloquent speaker. As a teacher, his method of teaching Materia Medica was lively and unique. Linking the profiles of medicines with success stories from his practice he used to create much interest among the students.
He was a votary of classical homoeopathy, both while teaching in classrooms and practicing. As a member of the Central Council of Homoeopathy and a member of its Education Committee, he contributed immensely for the upliftment of homoeopathic education and transformation of the then education regulations and curriculum.
Dr. Kar Sir had expertise in writing also. Besides publishing books on homoeopathy, he has also written books in the Odia language on politics, stories, biographies and satire, which are very popular among the readers.
His latest book in Odia titled ‘Homoeopathy Bibidha Prasanga’ has been selected for translation into English by the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences, Ministry of Ayush, Govt. of India. After publication of the English version, the valuable contents of the book will be disseminated among a larger audience of India and abroad.
Dr. Kar Sir was a successful administrator also. During his tenure as Principal-cum-Superintendent of Dr. Abhin Chandra Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Bhubaneswar, not only was there maximum development of the infrastructure of the college and hospital, but also the campus witnessed high quality teaching, clinical training and patient care.
A P.G. course in homoeopathy [M.D(Hom.)] was introduced in the college during his tenure, which created opportunity for the undergraduates of Odisha and outside to do higher study. He was an eloquent speaker and participated in many state, national and international seminars as resource person. Integrating theoretical knowledge with clinical experience, he made his deliberations interesting and appreciated among the audience.
Today, Dr. Kar Sir is not present among us physically, but his valuable writings will keep him immortal in the minds of homoeopathic professionals, for all time to come.
