Homeopathy and B. Jain – Growing Side by Side

Written by Geeta Rani Arora

A brief history of B. Jain and its evolution from a small publishing house to a full service homeopathy group.

For more than four decades, the B. JAIN Group has been synonymous with quality in homeopathy. A whole generation of homeopaths who grew up with the comprehensive B. JAIN books, has begun to gracefully pass the baton to the next generation. B. Jain has meanwhile grown to an international brand in the field of homeopathy, having a name in periodicals, books, IT, seminars, pharmaceuticals and of course the common thread in all of these, Homeopathy

B. JAIN Group’s foundation was laid in 1966 when Mr. P. N. JAIN, a typist who use to type homeopathic teachers’ notes in his spare time, started typing out-of- copyright homeopathic books during nights, to make a little extra money for his family. His books were available at incredibly low prices. Mr. Jain’s day-night efforts and the support of his wife Mrs. Bimla Jain, soon took the form of the B. JAIN publishing company. This brought a revolution in India. The industry fully supported Mr. Jain as it recognized his intentions and capabilities. Working closely with the senior-most doctors in the field, B. JAIN started publishing more books, crossing the mark of 100 titles in the first decade itself.   The Open International University for Complimentary Medicine, appreciative of Mr. Jain’s contribution to homeopathy, awarded him an honorary doctorate. B Jain  gave a platform to Indian doctors by publishing their books and making those available across the world.

Mr. Jain realized, that even though homeopathy was gradually taking roots in India and elsewhere, most homeopaths were working in isolation. There was no trustworthy medium of sharing technical findings with others in the fraternity. This gave birth to the first dedicated journal of homeopathy, “The Homeopathic Heritage”. The Homeopathic Heritage is the oldest homeopathic journal published continuously without any break. It gave a platform to homeopaths from different parts of the country and the world, to share their cases and thoughts and learn from each other. The Homeopathic Heritage has another feather in its cap, as it been peer reviewed since January 2013.

Mr. Kuldeep Jain, son of Dr. P.N. Jain, joined the group in 1976 and his vision gave a new direction to the group. He proactively exposed the Group’s Indian publications to various fora on one hand, while acquiring newer international publications on the other. Under his leadership, the Group became a new hope for  homeopaths globally, as it gave new life to many titles that had become rare. B. Jain has its own printing press, which has been awarded the fourth national award for excellence in printing. B. Jain’s books today are not limited just to homeopathy, but cover many other topics. With strong insight, the Group developed into a homeopathic industry, gradually diversifying into other allied fields. In 1993, the group started distributing the RADAR homeopathic software in Asia. Today RADAR OPUS is the most advanced and user – friendly homeopathic software, and is being used by most successful homeopaths around the world.

In 2004, when there were critical attacks on homeopathy, B. Jain felt the need to contribute to the growth and awareness of homeopathy. They felt that if homeopathy was not propagated and new entrants were not encouraged, the system  might perish. This thought gave birth to a Centre of Advanced Studies in Homeopathy (C.A.S.H.), a no-profit, no-loss organization that conducts a series of seminars and workshops for the propagation of homeopathy. C.A.SH gave a platform to many doctors and also helped expose students and practitioners to the wisdom of the most senior teachers. This helped inspire confidence in homeopathy’s scope and capabilities.

Mr. Jain realized that in spite of homeopathy having a large number of doctors and patients, the people at large still preferred foreign made medicines. One of the reasons for this, he learned, was that there was a lack of trust in the quality of remedies, and a need for transparency about them.

It was then that Mr. Jain decided to start a pharmaceutical plant with a difference. The difference would be a focus on quality, consistency and transparency. The most talented staff from across the world was selected for the project. In the first year of production the company acquired both Indian and Canadian GMP’s. GMP or Good Manufacturing Practices, is an internationally recognized comprehensive benchmark for quality assurance in medicine production. It covers everything from architecture, machines, raw materials and procedures to training. B. Jain has taken special care to have the entire plant constructed as per GMP norms. Strict cleanliness and access control is maintained in the sections where medicines are prepared. The entire plant is centrally air-conditioned; all entrances to the plant have air curtains. The water used in the plant is sourced from its in-house RO cum Demineralization unit. Following the GMP standards in letter and spirit, raw materials, whether plant, animal or chemical based, are all obtained from trustworthy sources. Herbs are procured from original sources located wherever ideal climatic conditions can be found.

Before actual medicine production starts, the herbs have to go through the quality control section. This section conducts detailed standardization tests on them to identify and isolate adulterants. The tests include organoleptic studies, macroscopic, microscopic observation and TLC. The special feature of B. Jain Mother Tincture is 100% of the correct herb being used, and a process known as ageing. Ageing involves keeping the liquid unstirred and unmoved for a certain number of days, which varies for different herbs, ranging from 10 days to 6 months.

B. Jain is developing its own in-house standards, which can then work as future references to assure consistent quality time and again. The unique aspect which B. Jain has initiated, gives each and every homeopath and customer the right to know how their medicines are being made. Any doctor who has bought a B. Jain medicine can ask for a testing report and analysis report, to ensure that the herb or raw material accuracy and quality has been confirmed. B. Jain invites all homeopaths to visit its pharmaceutical plant and is happy to share its processes.  At B. Jain we believe that every doctor has to assure that the medicine he or she uses is 100% correct (as advocated by Dr. Hahnemann in aphorism 264 – genuine medicine ) and for that he has the right to ask the pharmaceutical company for such assurance.

The highest quality mother tinctures thus prepared, form the base for the dilutions made at B. Jain. The plant uses the most advanced K- Tronic Potentiser imported from Belgiumm, which is the most accurate potentiser made to date.  To maintain its high accuracy of 99.6%, it is calibrated every six months by the parent company. The K-Tronic also ensures 99.6% accuracy by calibrating itself every time it makes a new potency.

The tablet section of B. Jain is another one of its kind unit, where premium quality tablets are made. B. Jain follows the detailed and more accurate Hahnemannian method of trituration, where complete batch trituritions are carried out in a mortar and pestle. The first sample of every batch is tested for quality control including Friability, DT and Weight Variation. The use of pure HMS lactose and disintegration time of 10-12 seconds of B. Jain tablets, makes the tablet different from the others.

The globule section is another well-equipped part of the B. Jain Pharmaceutical unit. The globules are also made in an environment as per GMP guidelines and are made from pharmaceutical grade sugar. The globules are largely exported to Europe and other countries and are highly appreciated for their quality.

The quality control department is a modern laboratory, equipped with advanced equipment and experienced chemists. The department also maintains the control samples of all batches for all the products being made from day one of  manufacturing .The QC department is also entrusted with detecting and preventing contamination in the production area. For this, the department conducts microbiological testing periodically in the production area.

It is the passion for attention to detail, that makes every medicine coming out of this plant, special. Thanks to the quality of its medicines, B. Jain entered the international market within a year of going into production. Today B. Jain medicines are being exported around the world, including North America, Pakistan, Thailand, Singapore, CIS Countries, Bangladesh and Romania. This high quality plant is B. Jain’s gift to the homeopathic fraternity of which B. Jain has been a part for more than 40 years. Dr. P.N. Jain had dreamt of making homeopathy a household name in India and B Jain is working towards making his dream a reality.

For B. Jain, Homeopathy is not just a business, but a passion, which is why they have sister concerns like C.A.S.H which work with the sole aim of popularizing homeopathy.  B. Jain today is a one stop shop for homeopathy, where homeopaths can get books, journals, magazines, globules, remedy bags and now high quality medicines with 100% assurance of its quality.
