Lectures on Organon of Medicine – Incurable Disease – Understanding Aphorism 75

Written by Leela D'Souza

We have all come across some ‘incurable’ cases in our practice. They are recognized by their hypersensitive state, complex miasmatic expression, and unclear, complicated clinical picture refractive to treatment of any kind. No remedy seems to fit adequately, or else indicated remedies have no lasting effect. It is like trying to release someone from wrought-iron closed prison with no key that fits.

These inroads on human health effected by the allopathic non-healing art (more particularly in recent times – emphasis Leela) are of all chronic diseases the most deplorable, the most incurable; and I regret to add that it is apparently impossible to discover or to hit upon any remedies for their cure when they have reached any considerable height.

Hahnemann drops the bombshell in #75. He talks about incurability of artificial disease, drug disease, created following chronic use of suppressive remedies, treatment, and therapy in “recent times”. Clearly Orthodox Medicine was losing its way in empty speculation and lack of perception. Today we find Modern Medicine in the same quandary, the main reason being, as Hahnemann said in Aphorism 70 that the system is not based on the Law of Cure (similars) but is either antipathic or dissimilar/allopathic to disease.

One such case of mine comes to mind, a young married girl, about 28 years. She began taking homeopathic combination/multiple remedies at 18 years of age, for over a year to “put on weight” because she was too thin (or so she thought at 40 kgs, 5′ 2″). She did “put on weight”, yes, but the homeopathic analysis is that she progressed from psoric miasmatic expression into sycotic expression. The proof of this is the sequelae that followed. She subsequently developed hypothyroidism.

She had got pregnant early in her marriage and decided she was too young to have a child and had it aborted. Subsequently she developed menstrual irregularities. Investigations revealed a pituitary adenoma. She then chose to have it surgically removed and underwent a brain surgery. Things went completely downhill, and spiraled out of control from then on.

The surgery resulted in complications, infection, leaking cerebrospinal fluid, etc for which a spinal tap was done to investigate further. She was sent home on multiple drugs prescription. She soon developed diabetes that over a period of 2 years stopped responding to hypoglycaemics. Ultimately she became insulin resistant as well. She was now 80 kgs in weight. And looks like a tremendously overweight Popeye of the famous comic strip. Added to this was a very high serum lipid levels with a diagnosis of Addison’s Disease.

No, the tale does not end there. She now began to have excruciating pain down her legs similar to Sciatica. She could barely move around due to her 80 kg weight, and every movement was severely painful in every muscle. The only way to remain pain free was to not move a single muscle and lie perfectly still in bed all day and night. This was the point of time that she came to me for help. This was her prison. Add to this, the uncontrolled diabetes which caused peripheral neuropathy and its symptoms, along with diabetic retinopathy. She was extremely sensitive to any homeopathic remedy given to her and 1M was the only potency that afforded her any relief – but just for a short while. Mother tinctures helped her for various different problems that came up including bringing her blood sugar down and reducing the oral and dental complications. I pulled out all the stops, antimiasmatic remedy, constitutional remedy, specific remedies, acute remedies, inter current remedies, mother tinctures, everything I could think of.

If nothing, I simply talked to her to give her some courage to face this suffering… (Placebo therapy). But it was obvious to me the incurability of her situation, her prison created by homeopathic cocktails, allopathic cocktails and surgical interference. Allopathy had no explanation and answer whatsoever: painkillers of any variety wouldn’t work. It all started with her vain desire to “put on weight” any how, to look good.

As a classical homeopath, I ask myself these questions.
Would a ‘new method” or a “new perspective” have helped find a remedy for this poor girl? Maybe?
Would it cure? Would it at least palliate? For how long?
Could any dynamic remedy get someone out of such a prison? Is the vital force able to overcome?

  • As an admirer of Homeopathy and Alternative Therapy Systems I offer the following comments:-
You have given a beautiful explanation of what you consider to be an incurable case. But there may be a treatment methodology which attempts to combine different systems of therapy as is attempted by Soham Foundation. Has the patient tried the Soham Foundation remedies for relief of pain and a general improvement in her overall condition? Of course Soham remedies are said to be Vibronics remedies and not necessarily homeopathic as it includes Organopathy, gem therapy ,etc.

  • Dr. You have enumerated a complicated case, but the characteristic/ peculiar or some striking symptoms of the patient has not been mentioned at all. If that is absent, try to use placebo and observe symptoms. Family history of disease may help you to select a nosode. Tuberculinum plus placebo may help here to unearth the characteristic symptoms. Thanks.
