Attacks on Homeopathy – Follow the Money!

Written by Alan V. Schmukler

In March 2015, the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) published an Information Paper on homeopathy, commonly referred to as ‘The Australian Report’, a supposed review of research studies on homeopathy.

This Report concludes:  “…there are no health conditions for which there is reliable evidence that homeopathy is effective”.

The people who conducted the review were against homeopathy from the start and  used every deception imaginable to manipulate the outcome. It was scientific malfeasance at the highest level.  When an original review found in favor of homeopathy, the NHMRC hid that review and conducted a second one. It then contrived every aspect of that review so it could falsely conclude that homeopathy wasn’t effective. (The original paper was only discovered through Freedom of Information (FOI) requests.)

The NHMRC misconduct included:

NHMRC’s guidelines state that such committees must include experts on the topic being reviewed, yet there was not one homeopathy expert on this committee

Later, the NHMRC stated that they rejected the first report because it was poor quality despite it being undertaken by a reputable scientist and author of NHMRC’s own guidelines on how to conduct evidence reviews.

A member of NHMRC’s expert committee overseeing the review process, Professor Fred Mendelsohn, confirmed the first review to be high quality saying-  “I am impressed by the rigor, thoroughness and systematic approach given to this evaluation.

NHMRC stated that the results of the second report published in 2015 were based on a “rigorous assessment of over 1800 studies”. In fact, they excluded all positive studies on homeopathy and only used 5 studies!

NHMRC used a method that has never been used in any other review, before or since. They decided that for trials to be ‘reliable’ there had to be at least 150 participants. This is despite the fact that NHMRC itself routinely conducts studies with fewer than 150 participants.

The Chair of the NHMRC committee that conducted the phony 2015 review, signed a conflict of interest form, despite being a member of anti-an homeopathy lobby group.

 THE OMBUDSMAN

In response to all this, the Australian Homeopathic Association (AHA) in August 2016, made a formal complaint to the Commonwealth Ombudsman against the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

The complaint, investigated under the PID (Whistle-blower Act), aimed to hold NHMRC accountable for bias, misconduct and ultimately misleading the public in their fraudulent 2015 report on homeopathy.

The fallacious report went round the world and was (and still is ) widely quoted by homeopathy critics. It was undoubtedly used in arguments which led to the defunding of homeopathic hospitals and the removal of homeopathy from the national health care systems of the UK, France and now Germany. The phony study led governments in Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the U.S.  to pass laws limiting access to homeopathy.

It was therefore of critical importance that the Australian Ombudsman conduct an investigation and then publicly discredit that report. Gerry Dendrinos, president of the Australian Homeopathic Association along with the Homeopathy Research Institute (HRI) gathered all the facts about the NHMRC’s misconduct and handed it to the Ombudsman.

And then seven years went by without a word from the Ombudsman. Finally, on August 4th 2023, the Ombudsman closed the investigation and issued this statement:

“Despite our best efforts, it was not possible to engage an expert (or experts) to provide independent advice to our Office on this subject. In the absence of independent, expert scientific expertise we have not been able to conclusively determine those matters of scientific methodology

Right. For seven years the ombudsman was unable to find a scientist who understood the basic rules of how to conduct objective research.

Disinformation campaigns against homeopathy are being conducted worldwide. They are followed by legislation restricting the practice of homeopathy and the sale of the remedies.  It’s all about corruption and bribes. You can easily spot the individuals involved in this. The legislator in any country who first introduces that legislation, is the one taking the money.

  • It’s very clear that homoeopathy is a threat both to the pharmaceutical world and allopathic medical professionals. Heartening though is that because of covid, a number critical thinking medical doctors have opened their minds to non-conventional western medicine.
