Sing me a Song, Dance me a Dance, Let Me Have Music All Night Long

Written by Valerie Lovelace

The author examines remedies which are affected in one way or another by music.

When I was asked to write this article, I did not know at the time that I was about to embark on a whimsical journey through rubrics and remedies to discover unique ways our vital force may be ‘tuned’ to the rhymes and rhythms of music, song, and dance. I happen to be one who is moved greatly by music of all kinds. I have a love for moving to the beat, so I was happy to agree to write this article. My feeling is that when we are healthy, music can evoke the call of the wild, creating an urge to wholeheartedly join with life’s fiery desire to live itself to the fullest. When we are compelled in that way, engaging in music is not only ameliorating, but revitalizing.

When those of us strongly affected by music are out of tune, we can’t quite stay with the beat, perhaps. Our circumstances likely feel disharmonious and out of step. It’s a bit like having to listen to a badly tuned piano causing the chords to sound just aside from the correct frequency. Things are just off. And when really stuck, the feeling is much like a stylus caught in the endless loop of a scratched vinyl recording, skipping into the same groove over and over again.

For this creative inquiry, I chose to search the RADAR database (Shroyens’ Treasure Edition Repertory) using the following search terms: Music, Singing, Song, Dance, and Dancing. For a basic overview, we’ll first look at the remedies, rather than the rubrics.

Music

This query resulted in 146 rubrics. Not surprising, TARENT holds the number one spot in the remedies with musical influences of one kind or another (Figure 1).

Figure 1: Music Rubrics

 image001

Singing

There are 158 rubrics in this category. Note how far TARENT moves down the singing list (Figure 2). Only four remedies make both lists in the top 20 remedies (TARENT, PH-AC, NUX-V, and PHOS).

image002

Figure 2: Sing/Singing Rubrics

STRAM is the number one hit in this category. I found it surprising that HYOS didn’t make the top 20 and that STANN holds the number one spot. I searched again using the term song, and HYOS came through loud and clear, slightly bawdier than STRAM (Figure 3).

image003

Figure 3: Song Rubrics

Quite a surprise to see RAJA-S at the top of this chart. Had I combined all the rubrics (SING/SINGING/SONG) on one clipboard, I might have overlooked this little tidbit, because RAJA-S slides down to spot 69 when they are all combined. And I likely never would have seen that ASC-T dreams of singing political songs, or that OLIB-SAC has persistent thoughts of music/song (PULS, on the other hand, has sleeplessness for thinking of the same melody). Searching with a variety of individual search terms will sometimes reveal nuances that otherwise could be overlooked.

Dance

80 rubrics refer to dancing. Top players in this category are BELL, TARENT, and—BORX?? Very interesting! Borax is used in soldering flux and that is all about movement and flow. Poor flow creates cold-solder joints and those make a mess of electronic devices, causing poor connectivity between components. I imagine the same would be true for connective tissues in the body of one whose vital force is calling for BORX.

Comparative Analysis

It should come as no surprise to find TARENT in the top 20 for each category, given its very clear signature. Massimo Mangialavori gives a wonderful description of this state in both his lecture series and his book. PH-AC also places in the top 20 in all three categories, but as we are about to see, the influence of music, song, and dance are very different for this state.

SEP and IGN are in the top 20 for both music and dance, and PHOS is found in the top 20 for music and song. And when it comes to song and dance, we find BELL, AGAR, SPONG, CROC, SULPH, NAT-M, ARG-N, and CAUST all in the top 20.

I have always enjoyed playing around with rubrics. For the comparative analysis, I decided to export the symptoms of the top 3 remedies in each category—and I have to confess it is because I was very curious to learn more about BORX and RAJA-S as those states relate to music.

We’ll be taking a look at the way music, song, and dance affect the remedy states TARENT, NAT-C, AMBR, STANN, STRAM, ARG-MET, RAJA-S, HYOS, BELL, and BORX. I decided to include PH-AC because it, like TARENT, places rather high in all three categories. For each remedy, I extracted all rubrics containing any of these words: music, song, singing, dance, and dancing. Single rubrics are in highlighted blue with bold type.

TARENTULA HISPANICA (TARENT)

Just a quick glance at these 40 rubrics, 13 of which are unique to the TARENT state, and the commonly understood image of this remedy emerges. There is great restlessness, sensitivity, and manic wildness in this state. It was fascinating for me to see some of the more unique rubrics emerge, ones I hadn’t heard about, such as a desire for music when the child is nursing, and involuntarily singing. I cannot imagine the state of feeling one must sing and does so, even if one has no desire or wish to sing.

Then there’s noises in the ear like a singing teakettle and retention of urine ameliorated by music. The TARENT state is both aggravated and ameliorated by music, with responses ranging from cheerful to fearful, and this state is particularly ameliorated by loud, wild music. This state is greatly ameliorated by wild dancing and jumping about.

PHOSPHORICUM ACIDUM (PH-AC)

PH-AC also suffers from urine retention and the patient must wait for it to start, but this state does not experience amelioration by music for that or any other symptom! Overall, PH-AC is aggravated by music. In fact, you’ll see by these rubrics that the patient calling for this remedy particularly experiences symptoms to the head, face, teeth, ears, and circulation that are made worse by music, such as stitches in the ear and head from every note. Looking only at the single rubrics, one can imagine the patient in this state is absolutely on end, teeth and ears jangling with exquisite sensitivity, somewhat like a tuning fork. If in doubt about prescribing this remedy, it may do well to consider an overall physical rather than emotional response to music (other than mental aggravations related to physical symptoms). I imagine turning on the radio in the consult room and asking the client to sing along might quickly confirm or rule out a need for it. Yikes!

NATRUM CARBONICUM (NAT-C)

NAT-C, like PH-AC, is overall aggravated rather than ameliorated by music, and this may result in anxiety and ultimately being driven toward a suicidal disposition. NAT-C is more susceptible to piano music, has delusions of hearing music and noises in the ear like singing—and more unique, this can be aggravated by rest.

Hearing is very acute with and aggravated by music, particularly during menses (unique to NAT-C). A patient calling for this remedy may experience external trembling aggravated by music. Of particular note in this study, the NAT-C state appears to be unaffected by singing or dancing.

AMBRA GRISEA (AMBR)

AMBR can be both ameliorated and aggravated by music and its aggravations can bring about weeping, sadness, and/or fear. The state experiences pains in the head and ears which music aggravates. Of unique interest in this remedy state, the patient calling for AMBR may have heat and congestion of the head, a red face, cough, difficult and/or asthmatic respirations, and back pain, all of which are aggravated by music. This patient may also experience heart palpitations when listening to music and experience external trembling similar to the NAT-C patient.

STANNUM METALLICUM (STANN)

Ameliorated by dancing and aggravated by music and singing, the STANN state manifests itself in the larynx, trachea and chest. Singing brings about rawness and hoarseness of the voice, particularly on beginning to sing. This state prompts quite unique localized and painful aggravations to the shoulders, dorsal back region, and the upper limbs. It is not difficult to imagine the Tin Man here, wishing for a heart, sleepily dancing down the yellow brick road and unable to sing along the way.

DATURA STRAMONIUM (STRAM)

I once saw this member of the Solanaceae at a garden nursery, and I was at once struck with its heavy darkness and nearly ominous, fearful presence. It sat alone on a table to itself and I thought at the time its blossom was both beautiful and terrible. I felt it kind of lurid and creepy.

When it comes to music, STRAM is active and cheerful with delirium and delusions of music and dancing in a churchyard (singing in Latin, Pater Noster (Our Father)), jumping about, its vocals alternating between laughing, singing, and weeping. As with Solanaceae, this may alternate with or be accompanied by fearfulness and frightful images and delusions. There is mania, lewdness, and obscenities in song, with sounds like singing in the ears that may be accompanied by vertigo. Most of the musical affect for this state is on the mind, although there may be a cough aggravated by singing and chorea after excessive dancing.

ARGENTUM METALLICAUM (ARG-MET)

This coin metal state is highly sensitive to music and singing aggravates most complaints, particularly those of the throat and chest. Like STANN, the affect is rawness and hoarseness of the larynx and trachea affecting the voice, but a subtle difference is the absence of the unique symptom related to beginning singing. The absence of pains in the upper extremities, back, and shoulders should be used to differentiate between the two metals’ music-related affects, not to mention STANN’s amelioration with dancing and ARG-MET’s lack of dance-related affects.

Additionally, ARG-MET may experience bifurcation (splitting apart) of the trachea and chest pains when both speaking and singing.

RAJANIA SUBSAMARATA

(RAJA-S) (AKA: AMPHYPTERYGIUM ADSTRINGENS, CUACHALALATE, CUACHALALA)

It might be easy to imagine this small remedy’s state as similar to that of STRAM or HYOS, yet here there is a religious fixation and sensitivity to religious music coupled with obscenity and lewdness. This sacred bark remedy from Mexico which some believe to be exploited to near extinction is a member of the Anacardiaceae (key sensations: stiffness, stuckness), whereas STRAM and HYOS areSolanaceae (key sensations: fearfulness, extreme fright).

With Sankaran’s differentiation of these plant families, it’s easier to keep them apart; RAJA-S will be stuck (too occupied with religion) and needing/desiring to move and/or feeling compensated with movement. Perhaps this is one aspect of the tension of opposites, pushing toward lewdness and obscenity.

A dead give-away for differentiation of this state is the rather unmistakable and unique physical symptoms of platelet destruction, cancerous ulcerations, and a black and red tongue (interesting symptom in light of religious and obscene songs rolling off of it!):

I was not surprised to see this member of the Solanaceaecome up looking very much like its cousin, STRAM. It does not appear to be quite as affected as STRAM and there are no single rubrics for this remedy associated with music, song, or dance.

I wanted to understand a bit more about music and religion in the Solanaceae, given the similarities that arose during this study (so of course I set off down the bunny trail to see what I might see). For HYOS, these additional rubrics came up (I also looked for things like musical instruments having an effect, such as bells, piano, harp, organ, and so forth):

The STRAM state has more rubrics related to religious affect and manifestations of whistling, so perhaps a good way to differentiate the two is that STRAM has whistling and HYOS has bells, so between the two of them, they are all whistles and bells. I don’t find it unusual that both states have sounds of singing in the ears, given their notoriety in treating symptoms of hallucination.

ATROPA BELLADONNA (BELL)

BELL appears to be the “dancing-est” of the Solanaceae (it even has dancing vision). Note the aversion to music in nursing children as opposed to a desire for it in the TARENT state. Also notice that BELL, HYOS, and STRAM may all experience chorea after excessive dancing. In fact, these are the only remedies appearing in that rubric. The three also experience noises in the ears like singing (along with 97 other remedies in that rubric).

BELL appears to enjoy nakedness as does HYOS, but note that in BELL there is a distinct lack of lewdness and obscenity associated with dancing (BELL lewdness and obscenity is associated with talking).

BORAX VENETA (BORX)

Generally aggravated by dancing, the BORX state experiences abdominal pressing pains of the hypochondria (spleen, liver, left kidney, and areas of the small intestine) while dancing, with swelling and inflammation of the legs and feet afterward. The musical noises in the BORX ear sound like piping.

Another unique symptom is that a child needing this remedy will be aggravated when someone holding them starts dancing.

Obviously, any study must encompass the overall state of a patient and should include those unique symptoms just as they are expressed, using the language and descriptions of the patient. Those affected in particular ways by music will give specific clues to the homeopath who is willing to delve into the expressions and spend some time researching and differentiating.

It is more obvious to me now that using a rubric like MIND – MUSIC – AGG (35 remedies) will not be as helpful as something more specific, like finding out what is aggravated, where it is aggravated, and under what circumstances, such as STOMACH – NAUSEA – MUSIC AGG (2 remedies) or FACE – PAIN – MUSIC AGG (3 remedies).
