An allergy is defined as an overreaction to usually harmless substance that the immune system determines is harmful, even if it is not. When the immune system is challenged with an allergen (substance which causes an allergic reaction) it becomes sensitized, committing the allergen memory. From that moment forward, the immune system recognizes the allergen and sets up a defense by releasing the chemical into the blood that may cause various symptoms.
Common allergies, causes, and symptoms
Hay fever – this is a common allergy occurring most often in the spring and summer months when pollen and mold spore counts are highest. Symptoms may include a runny nose, sneezing, and nasal obstruction.
Asthma – this disease affects the respiratory system and can cause repeated episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, tightness of chest, and coughing.
Pet allergy – probably the ,most common pet allergy is to cats, small, invisible flakes of skin known as dander are the culprit of pet allergy, causing itching watery eyes, runny nose, and sneezing.
Dust mite allergy – these microscopic organisms thrive in warm humid areas such as mattresses, carpet, and upholstery; they may create allergy symptoms like wheezing, a runny nose, or watery eyes.
Food allergy – A food allergy is an immune system response to a food that the human body has mistakenly identified as a harmful substance. Once the immune system decides that a particular is harmful to the body, it creates specific antibodies (immunoglobulin E) to defy the perceived enemy. Because of the perceived invasion, the immune system releases massive amounts of chemicals, including histamine, to protect the body. These chemical trigger a surge of symptoms that can affect the skin, respiratory system, gastrointestinal tract, or cardiovascular system.
Symptoms of food allergy mainly include:
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain or cramps, skin rashes, itching, swelling and redness, wheezing, cough, runny nose, etc.
Some other allergies mainly include:
