Maternal Mortality Rate in the U.S.

The number of U.S. women dying during pregnancy or soon after giving birth has been increasing.  In 2021, there were 32.9 deaths per 100,000 live births, compared with 23.8 per 100,000 in 2020 (National Center for Health Statistics). The U.S. rate greatly exceeds those of other high-income countries.

The U.S. is the only country in this analysis that does not provide universal health care leaving nearly 8 million women of reproductive age uninsured.
