Hello Dr. Khalsa,
I have a 12-year old Vizsla who is blind, has high b.p. and since she has been on b.p. meds her gums have gotten so big. She is currently on enalapril and amlodipine. Surgery is not an option.  Is there anything you can recommend?

Thank you
Susan Bushman

Dr. Deva Khalsa:

I do not have enough information to give you an answer to this question. My apologies, and you may want to schedule a consultation with me. Oftentimes, when pets are checked for BP in the hospital it is much higher than it would be normally. If this happens with people it is MUC H more common with pets

Hi Dr. Khalsa,
I am trying to cure giardia in a puppy without antibiotics. What is the recommended treatment for it?  That’s the main question, but if the background of the case is needed it’s the following:

I got a puppy 8 weeks old in the middle of July that looked like she had a skin reaction to something. She was being fed chicken/rice kibble from Proplan. I suspected allergies and switched her to raw food cold turkey. It didn’t go well as she started having bloody diarrhea after 3 days. I took her to the vet for fecal test which came back positive for coccidia and giardia and the vet wanted her on Royal Canine food plus 3 weeks of metro, which I questioned and the vet dropped me as a client.

I started with Petwellbeing GI Clean Up Gold and coconut oil at first for her. It stopped things from getting worse but wouldn’t improve the issue. Two weeks later I found a vet that is not opposed to more holistic treatments. We still put her on 7 days of fenbendazole as things have gone on long enough.

She tested negative Coccidia at that time and positive for giardia. Everything got better until 3 days post fenbedazole treatment. After that we started garlic twice per day. Few days later improvement. After a week had to stop garlic as she broke her tooth and had to go in for an emergency surgery. Three days later bloody diarrhea again with mucosal shedding.

She seems to shed her mucosal lining at least once a week. In between her weekly bouts of diarrhea and mucosal shedding everything looks like it’s getting better until next round of it. I am at a loss as to what to do.  The whole time she’s eating well, has high energy level most days and seems to be growing normal. Antibiotics don’t seem like a good option, but if this continues I might not have a choice.

Thank you,
Zhanna M.

Hello Dr. Khalsa,
Is there anything at all that may stop a springer spaniel from ‘shadow chasing’ and urinating when told off or happy-over excited!  He is 2 years old and sort of a rescue dog – (not badly treated just NOTHING done with him -no walks etc)  and is constantly ‘chasing shadows’ -it may be the reflection of sunlight from a watch; ripples from the sun on water glistening on a wall…he even attempts to jump on them when they are on the floor –  hitting his nose on the floor. Please any hints/help would be gratefully received.

Thank you

Dr. Deva Khalsa:

You can try Phosphorus 200c once a day for a week then twice a week for the next 4 weeks.  (Editor’s note: If the problem resolves, then stop the remedy.)

Dear Dr. Khalsa,
My dog is a female German Shepherd, 5 1/2 years old, weighing 40kg, neutered at the age of 3 years and had to be operated on for anal gland adenoma 2 months ago. She is now suffering from hip dysplasia and a fibroid tumour on the inside of her tail.  I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thank you,
Ambili Thalekkare

Dr. Deva Khalsa:

I don’t have enough information. What is a fibroid tumor? A lipoma? A fibrosarcoma?   I would have her thyroid function tested.  As far as hip dysplasia I need some sort of symptom picture to prescribe. Please resend your question with all the detail you can muster, including doctor’s diagnosis and any lab reports.

Hi Dr. Khalsa,
Recently we moved from California to New York.  My five year old cat had a hard time adjusting to this new environment.  Since the move, she has been losing her whiskers. She seems healthy otherwise. Is there a remedy I can give her?

Thank you

  • Hi Dr Khasla,
I have a 10 year old Sheppard mix (Belgian and German) in great shape and have 2 questions for you :

    1) Although my dog has no hip issue or injury and does not walk like a feline like pure German Sheppard often do, I noticed that he started missing steps with his hind legs that seem to start to drag along during a jump… I wish to know what remedy I could give him to prevent this from getting worse?

    2) He has caught lime disease in the past and I have given him Borelia and Ledum and he bounced back like nothing had ever happened. However, I was wondering if the nosode has to be given subsequently in time, year after year and in prevention of him catching the desease again ?

    Many many thanks!

  • Is there a remedy for fleas. I have a couple of 10 yrs. old chihuahuas. I got them flea collars, but looking for something better and less toxic.
