Homeopathic Treatment of a Patient with Schizoaffective and Skeletal Disorders

A case of schizoaffective disorder with Kyphosis.

Introduction: Schizoaffective disorder is defined according to(DSM-IV-TR) criteria. It is a perplexing mental illness that has features of schizophrenia, including hallucinations, delusions, and distorted thinking, and features of depression or mania. Schizoaffective disorder is best treated with psychotherapy plus appropriate conventional and homeopathic medication. (1)

Kyphosis is the general term used to define excessive posterior curvature of the thoracic spinal column. Six different causes have been defined. Scheuermann’s kyphosis seems to be the definite form of the patient in this article. It is an adolescent vertebral osteochondritis or adolescent kyphosis a self limiting affection that may lead to slight to severe kyphosis in later life. Thus it can cause pain, especially while lying on the back, along with exertional dyspnea. In severe cases, at best only 40% of the deformity can be corrected. (2)

Plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis are diseases of the immune system. In patients with plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, certain immune cells are activated and produce too much active tumor necrosis factor (TNF). This protein causes inflammation in the skin, which can cause skin cells to grow too quickly. The skin cells build up and form raised, red patches, often with silvery scales, known as psoriatic lesions. These plaques may itch, be painful, and can bleed. This protein also causes inflammation in the joints, which can create pain and progressive joint damage. (3)

Analysis of the patient: A married woman aged 49, fled from home after suffering auditory hallucinations and becoming suspicious of her husband, in 1983. She returned home after about 12 hours, then broke almost all her fragile dishes and almost hit her husband with a knife. Emergency officers came and calmed her down by injecting Diazepam. A psychiatrist visited her at home and prescribed Chlorpromazine and Akineton, afterward. Then he added Lithium carbonate because he observed bipolar phases of hypomania and depression. The patient was treated well, however experienced mild to moderate weakness of memory, weak self confidence, indecision, low energy and obesity due to the medicines’ side effects.

She was visited by the author in 2009, and according to the totality of symptoms and sonography of breasts and axillary regions, her rubrics were repertorized through radar software and the following remedies were selected and prescribed separately in single doses.(4)

According to the repertorization analysis, Lycopodium was the first selected remedy for the patient. Other remedies that were prescribed during about 3.5 years included; Calcarea Sulph. Lachesis Phosphorus Carcinocin and Hyoscyamus The potency of the remedies were mainly 30c and 200c prescribed in single doses.

Report of course of treatment: After taking the aforementioned remedies she experienced an inner calmness, an active memory and felt more energetic. She lost about 15 kg of body weight, her psychiatric condition got better by about 70%, psoriasis improved by about 80%, the patient’s thoracic vertebral column curvature improved by about 90%, the right axillary lymph nodes enlargement improved by 100%, also.

Conclusion: The patient with schizoaffective disorder was treated well by conventional drugs for twenty nine years, but suffered threatening side effects. During the last 3.5 years she got balanced and experienced prominent psychiatric improvement by about 70%. The medicinal side effects were reduced prominently, as well. Her need for the medicines was reduced as well. Moderate kyphosis improved by almost 90%, and thus related clinical symptoms such as back pain while lying subsided remarkably. Psoriatic itching eruptions improved by 80% and she needed almost no local and oral medicines. Lymph adenopathy of right axillary region improved totally. In other words, the totality of the patient was affected deeply through homeopathic remedies by neurological, endocrine and immune system balance.

  • DEAR DR
I HAVE SEEN IN MY PRACTICE THAT HOMEOPATHY DOES NOT CURE 100% MENTAL DISORDER. IT IS NOT CURED TOTALLY BY ANY SYSTEM OF MEDICINE. YOU HAVE YOURSELF STATED IN YOUR ARTICLE THAT THE PATIENT WAS NOT CURED BY ALLOPATHIC MEDICINES AND HE WAS IMPROVED 70% BY HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINES. IN FACT SUCH PATIENT REQUIRES MEDICINES THROUGHOUT LIFE.
    THANKS
    DR SHEKHAR

  • Dear Dr.Shekhar

Thank you for your comment. As you know psychiatric disorders are involve one’s deepest layer that is related to the fetal endoderm layer. It is a multifactorial disorder, too. Genetics plays the main role sociologic factors are also of prominent importance. In fact they trigger defected genes to create various psychiatric symptoms such as mania and paranoid suspicion. Biologic imbalance has been found to be another main cause of psychiatric disorders.

Thus complete cure of patients with such deep pathology needs harder work and research to establish a plan for reversing psychiatric disorders as chronic diseases.

    Best Wishes, Dr.Sadeghi

  • Is it worthwhile to take homeopathic treatment simultaneously alongwith Allopathic treatment for a schezophrenic patient?
