Hypothyroidism – SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

- Metabolic symptoms: Cold intolerance, modest weight gain (due to fluid retention and decreased metabolism).
- Neurologic symptoms: Forgetfulness, numbness of the hands and feet.
- Psychiatric symptoms: Personality changes, depression, dull facial expression, dementia or frank psychosis.
- Skin symptoms: Facial puffiness; myxedema; sparse, coarse and dry hair; coarse, dry, scaly and thick skin; carotenemia, particularly notable on the palms and soles (caused by deposition of carotene in the lipid-rich epidermal layers); macroglossia due to deposition of proteinaceous ground substance in the tongue

Hypothyroidism and pregnancy
Hypothyroidism affects your entire body. Your thyroid is responsible for many of your body’s daily functions, including metabolism, heartbeat, and temperature control. When your body doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone, all of these functions can slow.
Women who have hypothyroidism and wish to become pregnant face a particular set of challenges. Low thyroid function or uncontrolled hypothyroidism during pregnancy can cause:
- low birth weight
- brain development problems
- birth defects
Women with thyroid problems can and very often do have healthy pregnancies.
Diet for Hypothyroidism
- Foods that contain certain nutrients can help maintain proper thyroid function, such as iodine, selenium, and zinc.
- Other foods interfere with normal thyroid function, such as those containing goitrogens and soy, so limiting these can improve symptoms.
- Some foods and supplements can interfere with how well the body absorbs thyroid replacement medicine, so limiting these foods can also help.
