The Role of Homeopathy in the Treatment of Childhood Emotional Issues

Written by Jorge Manresa

Dr.Jorge Manresa discusses the role of homeopathy in the treatment of childhood problems. Homeopathy can help avoid the use of conventional drugs which don’t cure and which carry harmful side effects.

We live in a convulsed and accelerated society which also affects children. I think we all agree on this. Never before has the behavior of children been labeled so much, often with diagnoses that are nothing more than a bag into which a variety of disorders is put, whose symptoms are difficult to define. Nowadays, everything has a more or less accurate name, and children and young people do not escape that prevailing trend.

That everything is tried to be named and typecast, does not happen with possible treatment options. Little has changed with pharmacological therapy in the last 30 years to deal with behavioral and emotional problems that are of greater or lesser intensity in children. Children are diagnosed more often but they not always much better.

Conventional pharmacology is not used in practice in childhood except for hyperactive children older than 6 years or in major pathologies such as OCD, aggressiveness or severe autism. It is usually contraindicated due to possible side effects and their lack of specificity regarding triggering causes.

Hyperactive children remain to be so all their life due to all the medications they take during their infancy. Medications that were initially advertised to be harmless but now require tests such as the electrocardiogram and the control of arterial blood pressure and body weight before prescribing.

Is this not a bit exaggerated for a disorder that will only be treated at school age and that will persist throughout life? Would it not be a better way to integrate them into the current pedagogical system and to stop treating them at an age when no one complains to parents about their behavior?

The other therapeutic pillar to treat emotional and behavioral problems is provided by psychologists, teachers, support teachers and mental health centers of the health services of the different autonomous communities. They provide an essential service but are inadequate in time and form. To go to the psychologist every 2-3 months for an acute emotional stress problem is not very useful.

In the health center where I’m working as a pediatrician, it is rare nowadays that parents do not ask me how to address behavioral problems or emotional stress.

When pharmacological treatment is not indicated, then the only alternative is to wait 2-3 months in order to go to the Mental Health Center, which many parents reject for the stigma they believe it creates for their child. Or, they go to a private psychologist or teacher who then often wants pediatricians to use drugs to reduce their levels of anxiety pharmacologically.

On other occasions, there are treated and untreated hyperactive children, children with Asperger and children with a high IQ altogether in the same classroom. It is a  mix that is difficult to manage, even with the help of support teachers, as a teacher friend told me. Having described the current situation, what can we do now? What answer can we give to parents of children who are 6-7 years old?

Homeopathic remedies satisfy these clinical situations. They are effective, quick in action when needed, adaptable to any age and symptom trigger and are generally without side effects. Many years of clinical practice have shown this to me. Let’s have a look at some examples from these consultations. Some of them are so-called emergencies.

Bullying – This is is particularly typical, and it is helped by Staphysagria which can alleviate anger and the contained sense of injustice.

Separation of parents  – A frequently occuring situation, in which children are often used like an exchange of currency. Natrium muriaticum, Pulsatilla and Silicea  are examples of remedies used in these cases.

Acute affective disorders: Affective disorders and depression in adolescents can often be treated effectively with Natrum muriaticum.

Disruptive behavior at home or school, with rage, aggressiveness and insults, might indicate the use of remedies like Mercurius solubilis or Hepar sulph, among other remedies.

For insomnia caused by positive emotions like a school trip, birthdays, or the arrival of the Magi, Coffea, Passiflora and Chamomilla are useful to facilitate sleep.

Sleeplessness caused by negative emotions in sensitive children might be treated with Ignatia amara or Hyosciamus niger, among others.

For jealousy, which appears frequently in pediatric consultations, Lachesis or Hyosciamus niger can be helpful.

Hyperactivity: Tarentula hispanica, Anacardium, Aethusa cynapium, Dopaminum, among many others, will often prevent having to resort to conventional drugs with their disadvantages.

Anticipating anxiety: For nervousness when anticipating events, treatment with Gelsemium and Argentum nitricum will give excellent results.

Teething problems: Chamomilla, Belladonna and Cina are some of the homeopathic remedies that will allow us to avoid resorting to analgesics.

These are just some of the examples from consultations with parents in pediatrics. We pediatricians know how difficult it can be to address these problems through conventional methods. On the other hand, it is our obligation to respond to parents’ requirements in the most effective and safest possible way.

So why not turn to homeopathic remedies? Let us not hesitate. With them we  have a safe and efficient way to treat patients at any age and, above all, the child  does not have to suffer.
